Tim Powers

Our Author Guest of Honor for 1995 maintained ConFusion's strong Clarion connections as a past attendee and instructor, did some great talks, including his participation in a discussion of Dinner at Deviant's Palace, and was a very friendly and accessible guest. The SF-Lovers' review follows.

Tim Powers' first two books are best left forgotten (even the re-writes). His later books, however, are excellent. "The Drawing of the Dark" is an entertaining book, especially for its central revelation (which I refuse to spoil). From the gonzo alternate history / time travel of "The Anubis Gates", to the bizarre post-apocalyptic visions of "Dinner at Deviant's Palace" to Voodoo and Blackbeard in "On Stranger Tides", any of his later books are recommended, and I'm looking forward to "The Stress of Her Regard".
